Derek Gow: Farmer-Turned-Rewilder
Op donderdag 10 september ontvangen we een van de meest uitgesproken, eigenzinnige én invloedrijke stemmen uit het Europese rewildingveld: Derek Gow uit Engeland.
Derek Gow is een befaamd ecoloog, auteur, boer en herintroductiespecialist. Hij speelde een sleutelrol in de terugkeer van de bever in Groot-Brittannië, de herintroductie van de ooievaar, en het behoud van zeldzame soorten zoals de wilde kat, Noorse woelmuis en grauwe klauwier. Zijn boerderij, Rewilding Coombeshead, is een broedplaats voor wilde ideeën én wilde dieren, en geldt als een van de meest inspirerende rewildingplekken van het Verenigd Koninkrijk.
Derek is ook auteur van onder meer Bringing Back the Beaver en Birdsong in a Time of Silence, en wordt vaak omschreven als de “rogue rewilder” — onverschrokken, confronterend en visionair.

Tijdens deze lezing spreken Marc Wilbers en Derek Gow over het herstellen van natuurlijke processen, de rol van controversiële herintroducties, en de maatschappelijke en ecologische uitdagingen van rewilding in sterk gecultiveerde landschappen zoals het onze. Derek zal spreken over zijn ervaringen, successen en tegenslagen — en waarom rewilding volgens hem geen luxe is, maar een noodzaak.
Er is ruime gelegenheid voor vragen en gesprek.

- Overige drankjes bij binnenkomst of na afloop zijn voor eigen rekening. Graag lege kopjes na afloop op de bar zetten – dat helpt de eigenaar enorm.
Let op: Deze lezing wordt volledig in het Engels gehouden.

Rewilding with Derek Gow – Visionary Restorer of the British Wilderness
On Thursday, 10 September, we welcome one of the most outspoken, unconventional, and influential voices in the European rewilding movement: Derek Gow from England.
Derek Gow is a renowned ecologist, author, farmer, and species reintroduction specialist. He played a key role in the return of the beaver to Britain, the reintroduction of the white stork, and the conservation of rare species such as the wildcat, Norwegian vole, and red-backed shrike. His farm, Rewilding Coombeshead, is a breeding ground for wild ideas and wild animals, and is regarded as one of the UK’s most inspiring rewilding sites.
Derek is also the author of Bringing Back the Beaver and Birdsong in a Time of Silence, and is often described as the “rogue rewilder” — bold, confrontational, and visionary.
Topic: Rewilding – Practice, Provocation, and Passion
During this talk, Marc Wilbers and Derek Gow will discuss the restoration of natural processes, the role of controversial species reintroductions, and the social and ecological challenges of rewilding in heavily cultivated landscapes like ours. Derek will share his experiences, successes, and setbacks — and why, in his view, rewilding is not a luxury, but a necessity.
There will be ample opportunity for questions and dialogue.
