We zijn trots en vereerd om een unieke en inspirerende gastspreker te mogen verwelkomen: Dr. Purnima Devi Barman uit Assam, India. Purnima is internationaal bekend als de oprichter van de Hargila Army – een grassroots beweging van meer dan 20.000 vrouwen die samen bomen planten, leefgebieden herstellen, duurzame landbouwpraktijken ontwikkelen en de ernstig bedreigde greater adjutant stork beschermen.
Purnima staat wereldwijd bekend als “The Stork Sister” en werd onder meer onderscheiden met de volgende prijzen:
• UN Champions of the Earth Award (de hoogste VN-onderscheiding voor milieubeschermers)
• Whitley Award (de ‘Green Oscar’)
• TIME Magazine Women of the Year 2025 – als erkenning voor haar impact op biodiversiteitsbehoud én vrouwenemancipatie
Ze is zelden in Europa en wordt tijdens haar korte verblijf in Nederland overspoeld met interview- en ontmoetingsverzoeken. Dankzij haar warme samenwerking met de Rewilding Academy kunnen wij u op deze avond een zeldzame kans bieden om haar persoonlijk te horen spreken.
🌿 Onderwerp: Rewilding – Van India tot Nederland
Samen met Marc Wilbers duiken we in het thema rewilding: het herstellen van natuurlijke processen en het beschermen van ecosystemen, zowel lokaal als wereldwijd. Wat betekent rewilding in een tropisch moerasgebied in Assam, en wat kunnen we daarvan leren voor ons eigen landschap? Hoe kan rewilding tegelijk ecologische én sociale impact hebben?
Purnima vertelt in het Engels over haar levensverhaal, haar strijd om een door velen verguisde vogel tot symbool van hoop te maken, en hoe vrouwen in haar regio de motor zijn geworden achter natuurherstel, economische ontwikkeling en trots op het eigen leefgebied.
Een avond vol verhalen, inspiratie en verbinding – met ruimte voor vragen en ontmoeting.

- Prijs: €25,- per persoon (inclusief koffie/thee in de pauze)
Overige drankjes bij binnenkomst of na afloop zijn voor eigen rekening. Graag lege kopjes na afloop op de bar zetten – dat helpt de eigenaar enorm.
Let op: Een groot deel van de lezing zal in het Engels zijn.

We are proud and honoured to welcome a unique and inspiring guest speaker: Dr. Purnima Devi Barman from Assam, India. Purnima is internationally renowned as the founder of the Hargila Army—a grassroots movement of over 20,000 women planting trees, restoring habitats, promoting sustainable farming, and protecting the critically endangered greater adjutant stork.
Globally known as “The Stork Sister”, Purnima has received several prestigious awards, including:
- UN Champions of the Earth Award (the UN’s highest environmental honour)
- Whitley Award (the “Green Oscar”)
- TIME Magazine Women of the Year 2025 – in recognition of her impact on biodiversity conservation and women’s empowerment.
She rarely visits Europe and is in high demand during her short stay in the Netherlands. Thanks to her warm partnership with the Rewilding Academy, we are thrilled to offer a rare opportunity to hear her speak in person.
🌿 Topic: Rewilding – From India to the Netherlands
Together with Marc Wilbers, we will explore the theme of rewilding: restoring natural processes and protecting ecosystems, both locally and globally. What does rewilding look like in a tropical wetland in Assam, and what can we learn from it for our own landscapes? How can rewilding generate both ecological and social impact?
Purnima will speak in English about her life story, her journey to turn a once-reviled bird into a symbol of hope, and how women in her region have become a driving force behind ecosystem restoration, economic development, and renewed local pride.
An evening full of stories, inspiration, and connection—with space for questions and informal conversation.
