Prof. dr. ir. Raoul Beunen is a professor of Environmental Governance at the Open University, where he leads research and education on sustainability transitions and the governance of environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and spatial planning. His work examines the roles of governments, businesses, organisations, and citizens in shaping sustainable futures, with a focus on identifying opportunities and overcoming barriers.
A passionate bird enthusiast, he is also a board member of the Dutch organisation Advocaat van de Aarde (Advocate for the Earth): a Dutch foundation that supports organisations and citizen initiatives focused on environmental protection and sustainability. It leverages legal, political, and public measures to address ecological challenges such as biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change.
A prominent expert on environmental issues in the Netherlands, he frequently contributes to public debates on topics such as nitrogen challenges and nature conservation, offering insights that shape policy and public understanding. As Chairman of the foundation “Mooi Wageningen”, he actively promotes biodiversity enhancement and the protection of nature and landscapes in the Netherlands.
