Megafauna Lezing
Grote herbivoren, als wisenten, runderen, waterbuffels en paarden zijn uitgezet in Nederland om verschillende redenen, waaronder natuurbehoud, het herstel van ecosystemen en het vergroten van de biodiversiteit. Boswachter, natuurkenner en wolvenspecialist Marc Wilbers vertelt je graag alles over het leven, ecologie en van deze dieren en de gebieden waar je ze kunt vinden. Naast allerlei wetenswaardigheden en het laatste nieuws, laat Marc Wilbers het gedrag van wisenten en de reactie op andere dieren, zoals wolven, zien d.m.v. van foto’s en video’s.
De wisent, ook bekend als de Europese bizon, is een inheemse diersoort die ooit in grote delen van Europa voorkwam. Echter, door jacht en habitatverlies werd de wisent bijna uitgeroeid. Door ze opnieuw in het wild uit te zetten, wordt bijgedragen aan het behoud van deze soort en het voorkomen van uitsterven.
Tijdens zijn lezing krijg je antwoorden op vragen als: Hoe leven de grote herbivoren in het wild? Wat is hun typische gedrag en sociale structuur? Wat is de ecologische rol van herbivoren in hun natuurlijke habitat? Hoe beïnvloeden ze het landschap en de biodiversiteit? Wat is de geschiedenis van de grote herbivoren in Europa en Nederland? Hoe is hun populatie door de tijd heen veranderd? Waarom zijn wisenten uitgezet in Nederland en andere delen van Europa? Hoe verloopt het proces van het uitzetten van deze dieren?
De antwoorden op deze vragen kunnen een dieper inzicht bieden in het belang van grote herbivoren voor de natuur en de samenleving, evenals de uitdagingen en kansen die gepaard gaan met hun herintroductie en behoud. Marc Wilbers bespreekt het verlies van onze grote megafauna en het effect daarvan op onze biodiversiteit, evenals het vervangen van alle grote grazers en de manieren waarop we de natuur in de afgelopen decennia weer iets completer proberen te maken.

Wisent Lecture
Large herbivores, such as European bison, semi-wild cattle, water buffalo and horses, have been reintroduced in the Netherlands for various reasons, including nature conservation, ecosystem restoration, and increasing biodiversity. Forest ranger, naturalist, and wolf specialist Marc Wilbers is looking forward to tell you all about the life, ecology, and habitats of these large herbivores. In addition to various interesting facts and the latest news about the bison, Marc Wilbers illustrates the behaviour of large herbivores and their response to other animals, such as wolves, through photos and videos.
The bison is a native species that once roamed large parts of Europe. However, due to hunting and habitat loss, the bison was nearly eradicated. Reintroducing them into the wild contributes to the conservation of this species and prevents extinction.
During his lecture, you will get answers to questions such as: How do large herbivores live in the wild? What is their typical behaviour and social structure? What is the ecological role of large herbivores in their natural habitat? How do they influence the landscape and biodiversity? What is the history of large herbivores in Europe and the Netherlands? How has their population changed over time? Why were bison reintroduced in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe? How does the process of reintroducing these animals work?
The answers to these questions can provide a deeper understanding of the importance of bison for nature and society, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their reintroduction and conservation. Marc Wilbers discusses the loss of our large megafauna and its effect on our biodiversity, as well as the replacement of all large grazers and the ways in which we have been striving to restore nature to a more complete state in recent decades.

Marc Wilbers
Boswachter Marc Wilbers is een gepassioneerde natuurliefhebber met uitgebreide expertise op het gebied van wolvengedrag en de herintroductie van bizons. Zijn levenslange fascinatie voor de natuur heeft hem een diep inzicht gegeven in flora en fauna, en hoe ze met elkaar en hun fysieke omgeving omgaan binnen een specifiek gebied of habitat. De laatste jaren heeft hij zich voornamelijk gericht op de terugkeer van de wolf naar Nederland, wat een belangrijk punt in zijn werk markeert. Hij organiseert regelmatig lezingen, presentaties en rondleidingen, en draagt bij aan radio- en tv-programma’s.

Marc Wilbers is a passionate naturalist with extensive expertise in topics concerning wolf behaviour and bison reintroduction. His lifelong fascination with nature has endowed him with a deep understanding of flora and fauna, and how they interact with each other and their physical environment within a specific area or habitat. In recent years, his primary focus has been on the wolf’s return to the Netherlands, marking a pivotal point in his work. He organises frequent lectures, presentations and tours, and contributes to radio and tv programmes.
