Wisenten Excursie Veluwe
Wisenten zijn uitgezet in Nederland om verschillende redenen, waaronder natuurbehoud, het herstel van ecosystemen en het vergroten van de biodiversiteit. De wisent, ook bekend als de Europese bizon, is een inheemse diersoort die ooit in grote delen van Europa voorkwam. Echter, door jacht en habitatverlies werd de wisent bijna uitgeroeid. Door ze opnieuw in het wild uit te zetten, wordt bijgedragen aan het behoud van deze soort en het voorkomen van uitsterven.
Ga mee met boswachter en wisentspecialist Marc Wilbers en leer alles over de wisent in Nederland. De Excursie vindt plaats in de boswachterij Kootwijk op de Veluwe. Naast allerlei wetenswaardigheden en het laatste nieuws over de wisenten, wijst Marc Wilbers op allerlei sporen in het veld. Die sporen vertellen verhalen over het gedrag van dieren als herten, reeën, wilde zwijnen, wolven, vossen, raven en andere soorten.
Tijdens de excursie krijg je antwoorden op vragen als: Hoe leven wisenten in het wild? Wat is hun typische gedrag en sociale structuur? Wat is de ecologische rol van wisenten in hun natuurlijke habitat? Hoe beïnvloeden ze het landschap en de biodiversiteit? Wat is de geschiedenis van de wisenten in Europa en Nederland? Hoe is hun populatie door de tijd heen veranderd? Waarom zijn wisenten uitgezet in Nederland en andere delen van Europa? Hoe verloopt het proces van het uitzetten van deze dieren?
De antwoorden op deze vragen kunnen een dieper inzicht bieden in het belang van wisenten voor de natuur en de samenleving, evenals de uitdagingen en kansen die gepaard gaan met hun herintroductie en behoud. Marc Wilbers bespreekt het verlies van onze grote megafauna en het effect daarvan op onze biodiversiteit, evenals het vervangen van alle grote grazers en de manieren waarop we de natuur in de afgelopen decennia weer iets completer proberen te maken.
Locatie
In het hart van de Veluwe bevindt zich boswachterij Kootwijk, een van de oudste gebieden van Staatsbosbeheer. Hier vind je bos, heidevelden en de grootste zandverstuiving van West-Europa. Een deel van dit gebied is het leefgebied van de wisenten. Samen met de al van nature voorkomende edelherten en wilde zwijnen maken zij dit gevarieerde landschap nog aantrekkelijker.
De wisenten leven in een afgeschermd gebied binnen een omheining nodig. Deze omheining is speciaal ontworpen zodat het alleen voor de wisenten een belemmering vormt. Andere diersoorten worden niet gehinderd in hun gedrag. Het gebied mag alleen onder begeleiding worden bezocht.
Deelnemers
Deze excursie is geschikt voor volwassenen en kinderen 12 jaar en groepen tot 15 personen. Voor de excursie zijn minimaal 6 deelnemers nodig. Alleen bij voldoende inschrijvingen kan de excursie plaatsvinden. Let op: vaak zijn de plaatsen snel uitverkocht.

Tips voor de excursie
- Pas je kleding aan op het weer en zorg indien nodig voor regenkleding.
- Draag stevige, waterdichte schoenen of laarzen.
- Vergeet niet je verrekijker en camera mee te nemen.
- Honden zijn helaas niet toegestaan tijdens deze wandeling.
Bison Excursion on the Veluwe
Bison have been reintroduced in the Netherlands for various reasons, including nature conservation, ecosystem restoration, and increasing biodiversity. The bison, also known as the European bison, is a native species that once roamed large parts of Europe. However, due to hunting and habitat loss, the bison was nearly eradicated. Reintroducing them into the wild contributes to the conservation of this species and prevents extinction.
Join forest ranger and bison specialist Marc Wilbers and learn all about bison in the Netherlands. The excursion takes place in the Kootwijk forest district in the Veluwe. In addition to various interesting facts and the latest news about bison, Marc Wilbers points out various traces in the field. These traces tell stories about the behavior of animals such as deer, roe deer, wild boars, wolves, foxes, ravens, and other species.
During the excursion, you will get answers to questions such as: How do bison live in the wild? What is their typical behavior and social structure? What is the ecological role of bison in their natural habitat? How do they influence the landscape and biodiversity? What is the history of bison in Europe and the Netherlands? How has their population changed over time? Why were bison reintroduced in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe? How does the process of reintroducing these animals work?
The answers to these questions can provide a deeper insight into the importance of bison for nature and society, as well as the challenges and opportunities associated with their reintroduction and conservation. Marc Wilbers discusses the loss of our large megafauna and its effect on our biodiversity, as well as the replacement of all large grazers and the ways in which we have been striving to restore the nature to a more complete state in recent decades.
Location
In the heart of the Veluwe lies the Kootwijk forest district, one of the oldest areas managed by Staatsbosbeheer (State Forestry Management). Here you will find forests, heathlands, and the largest sand drift in Western Europe. Part of this area is the habitat of the wisents. Together with the naturally occurring red deer and wild boar, they make this diverse landscape even more attractive.
The wisents live in a fenced area within an enclosure. This enclosure is specially designed so that it only forms an obstacle for the wisents. Other species are not hindered in their behaviour. The area may only be visited under supervision of a qualified guide.
Participants
This excursion is suitable for adults and children of 12+ years and groups of up to 15 people. A minimum of 6 participants is required for the excursion. The excursion can only take place if there are enough registrations. Please note: places often sell out quickly.

Tips for the excursion
- Adjust your clothing according to the weather and bring rain gear if necessary.
- Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes or boots.
- Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera.
- Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on this hike.

Marc Wilbers
Boswachter Marc Wilbers is een gepassioneerde natuurliefhebber met uitgebreide expertise op het gebied van wolvengedrag en de herintroductie van bizons. Zijn levenslange fascinatie voor de natuur heeft hem een diep inzicht gegeven in flora en fauna, en hoe ze met elkaar en hun fysieke omgeving omgaan binnen een specifiek gebied of habitat. De laatste jaren heeft hij zich voornamelijk gericht op de terugkeer van de wolf naar Nederland, wat een belangrijk punt in zijn werk markeert. Hij organiseert regelmatig lezingen, presentaties en rondleidingen, en draagt bij aan radio- en tv-programma’s.
