Bernd Nonnenmacher
General Manager, Foundation for Bears
Bernd Nonnenmacher grew up in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, where he developed a deep love for nature and the local forests. Fascinated by bears, wolves, and lynxes from an early age, his passion for these animals grew during a stay in the USA, where he encountered wild bears for the first time—an experience that profoundly shaped his commitment to wildlife conservation.
After studying law in Tübingen, Göttingen, and the USA, Bernd spent over 15 years as an international business consultant, honing his leadership and project management skills. Motivated by his interest in nature, he transitioned to the field of animal protection. He became project leader of the Alternative Wolf and Bear Park Black Forest, where he successfully improved operations and advanced its mission.
Since becoming Managing Director of the Alternative Bear Park Worbis, Bernd has overseen the rescue and rehabilitation of 16 bears, 16 wolves, and 6 lynxes, offering them a safe and dignified life in sanctuaries. He is committed to raising awareness about the plight of animals in poor conditions and fostering international cooperation to create lasting change.
Bernd believes animal welfare transcends borders, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among organizations across Europe. His vision is clear: through teamwork and dedication, we can restore ecosystems and improve the lives of both animals and people. For Bernd, managing the Bear Parks is not just a job—it is a true calling and a chance to make a meaningful impact.
