Steffen Heiber

Carnivore Specialist

Steffen Heiber has been actively involved in wolf monitoring since 2012, currently overseeing two wolf packs in Brandenburg, Germany. His work involves close collaboration with the Lupus Institute, an organization specializing in wolf research and conservation. Although not formally a biologist, Steffen has built a wealth of expertise through fieldwork and his long-term commitment to wolf conservation efforts.

In 2019, after completing a specialised training course, “Wildnisswissen Wolf,” at the Lupus Institute, Steffen was appointed as Brandenburg’s Wolf Commissioner. His interest includes wildcats and other large carnivores, reflecting the growing need for comprehensive wildlife management. In addition, he has completed conflict management training with WWF and gained international experience with wolves in Poland, Romania, and Georgia.

Steffen has also worked for two years in wolf management and maintains ongoing collaboration with Brandenburg’s prevention office to address livestock protection. He regularly communicates with livestock owners to mitigate potential conflicts between wolves and agricultural interests. His extensive experience, both in the field and with stakeholder engagement, positions him as a key person in large carnivore conservation in the region.
